The Shiny Has Arrived

I ordered my iPad a few weeks ago now, and it finally arrived today! It actually made it into town Saturday and had to sit in a warehouse all alone until today, but I won’t dwell on that, because now, it is in my hot little hands! Bwahahahaha!

But, I know you all want the nitty gritty on how this works. For writing. Of course. Only writing. Cuz, we all want it for practical reasons…right?

Well, I opened the box, a chorus sang (not really, but it sounds good) and then I had to hook it up to the computer and get it linked up to itunes. (you need to latest version…do yourself a favor and upgrade BEFORE your iPad gets here so you don’t have to sit and stare longingly at it for a HALF AN HOUR while your computer updates).

So, once it was set and ready to go, I went to the app store and bought Pages (a must) and Corkulous, an app I was really excited to use for storyboarding. Then, I set up my email, which was so easy *I* could do it. I proceeded to email a Microsoft Word doc from my PC to my iPad. I opened the attachment, and it asked me if I wanted to import to pages. Um, yes, ma’am. And it imported beautifully, all formatting preserved and perfect. From PC to Mac. Next, I predict world peace.

I also ordered a nifty BlueTooth keyboard to go with the iPad. So I linked it up and I was typing away in Pages in no time. It’s as fast as typing on my laptop and infinitely prettier.

And this evening, I’ve been playing with Corkulous. Oh, wow, it is SO fun. I made a little storyboard you can see over there —> for my WIP. Some photos and some notes, and it’s just really, really really fun. And VERY easy to use.

Also, as you can see my one of my piccys down there, I made my book cover the wallpaper for the iPad, which just makes me ridiculously happy.

The battery life is pretty crazy good, 10hrs with WiFi on, but I hear there are people who are getting better than that.

Okay, bottom line: Is the iPad practical for writers? Yes, but please do get an external keyboard. While the one on the iPad is great for writing email and tweeting and Facebooking, it won’t work for big ol’ docs, and for those of us who type over 90WPM.

But Pages works great, even if you have a PC. It does what you need it to do, it lets you write, plus it has some stinking cool features beyond that.

Web browsing? Awesome. I love being able to zoom in with such precisions. The apps? So much fun, and very handy. I got Epicurious, since I like to cook, a dictionary, thesaurus, Dragon Dictation (which works amazingly well) and a Word Press app all for free.

Bottom line, you so want one. You do. You really, really do.

  1. WANT!!!

  2. Welcome to the world of Apple love. I have a MacBook (gave it to my hubby now), a MacBook Pro, an iMac, an iPhone, an iTouch, and now I covet the new phone. Hubby wants the iPad, but I’m sticking with my MBP b/c I paid a lot for it, LOL.

Once you go Mac, you never go back. πŸ˜‰

  3. Yeah…did you see that my Toshiba cord died the day I got the iPad? HAHAHAHA. Ahem. My Maccy buddy Fb’d me from his honeymoon to say I need a MacBook. I’m writing this comment from the iPad because I have no lappy until I get the new cord. So I’m really putting it through it’s paces. did 2k on my WIP on it today! So awesome. And did more on my hawt cork board. πŸ™‚

Also, Lynn, I know all about the other thing you never go back from (see my hubby. *g*) and you may also be right about the Mac. πŸ˜€

  4. I WANTSSSSSS…. Have to wait until July before Apple deigns to ship to NZ. Waaaah!! Shall have to console myself with playing with my iPhone instead. πŸ˜‰
    Love the corkboard thingy.

  5. I went for Infinotes (as you can zoom out and see all your notes at once – useful if you plot with coloured notes *g*), but was v tempted by Corkulous. GoodReader is good for PDFs (so you might be able to use that for your AAs).

Have discovered how to do coloured text, how to make photo albums (ha ha ha, got lots of Antonio Banderas in my Gorgeous Men file – and obviously one for the new book with the Venice research pics), and how to make it so DH and I can share an iTunes account to avoid lots of duplicate files BUT also not have stuff of each other’s we hate on our iPad/iPod respectively. Cool.

Have you seen Star Walk? That’s immensely cool.

And Boggle is brilliant. (I want Scrabble next. Not that I use this for playing. Much.)

And isn’t it cool to be able to do your own wallpaper etc? :o)

So have you given it a name yet? (For some reason, I want to call mine Padawan. I’m not a Star Wars geek, honest. But that’s what came straight into my head…)

  6. Kate, LOL, I haven’t named mine. But my corkulous sotryboard for my WIP is done and SO fun. I did a sketch of my heroine in her red gown in Draw, which is a cool freebie and put it in the cork thing. So cool. And got their conflicts and goals on sticky notes, that was just fun!

I haven’t done Boggle yet, but I want to. And I want scrabble, and sketchbook pro.

The only thing with the AAs is that you need two things open. I don’t know how that would work…but I’m expecting some soon, so I might experiment.

I have to look up Star Walk is sounds like. I haven’t seen it! I’ve gotten a few K on my WIP done on it though, and laid in bed and edited today, which was VERY cool.

    I loves it!

  7. Am glad you love it Maisey!

I am SO trying to twist James arm. We have been all mac-ked up ( i know, I have made that word up)at home for years with both laptops and the desktop so we take no converting – but I just can’t seem to make him see the need for the ipad… I don’t NEED it, I just WANT it!
    Doh.

  8. I read this Tuesday and it made me go out and buy one the next day. I can’t wait for things to be delivered πŸ™‚ so had to find one in stock (all Apple stores near me were sold out) and luckily BestBuy had them!

    Thanks πŸ˜‰
    Sarah

  9. Oh wow! Sarah I hope you love it as much as I do. Did you get the bluetooth keyboard or the dock? Anyway, moving onto day four with mine and I’m still in love.

  10. No keyboard yet but if I do go that route it will be the bluetooth one because I don’t like that keyboard they have which plugs into the dock “hole” πŸ™‚ I have the iPad Dock so that I can stand it up on my desk.

I’m treating it so carefully LOL – I have Apple’s own case on order plus the camera connector kit.

Just been taking some screenshots of how website look on the iPad (I am a web designer) so that I can show clients how good their sites look. I had to google how to take the screen captures with it (I needed to have the iPad browser top/bottom showing). They have turned out fab. Clients will be impressed.

  11. Oh, that’s excellent news! Wonderful that you have such a great use for it…makes you not feel so guilty. LOL. And it’s just PRETTY and SHINY and FUN. πŸ™‚
